To keep the water flowing, the pump needs to be powered by either mains electric or solar panels. There are benefits and drawbacks to both power sources, so how do you know which is best for you?

Using your mains electricity to power your water feature gives you the freedom to turn the pump on and off whenever you want, regardless of whether the sun is out. This is a great benefit for powering a water feature in the unpredictable British weather. However, using mains electricity means that you’ll have to install wires from your house to your water feature. To do this you could bury the wires underground. However, this often costs money, is a hassle, and means you don’t have the freedom to move your feature to a different place in your garden at a later date. Another option is to have the wires on top of the ground. However, this might ruin the look of your garden with wires snaking through your flower beds or over your lawn.

Solar-powered water features are much easier to install. Simply place them in an area of your garden that gets direct sunlight - meaning no ugly wires. This option is also more environmentally and economically friendly as the energy used comes directly from the sun, meaning it's free and doesn’t damage the planet. However, unless the solar water feature has an attached battery that can retain charge, the water feature will only work in direct sunlight. Unfortunately, this means you can’t enjoy the water feature in darker evenings or in cloudy, bad weather.

How to look after your water feature?

Water features are relatively easy to maintain, ensuring years of enjoyment. To keep the pump in working order, you need to keep an eye out for any leaves or debris that fall into the reservoir pool, risking a blockage. It’s also important to empty, wash, and refill the reservoir every so often.

To maintain the look of your water feature, all you need to do is give it a quick wash with warm water, dish soap, and a soft brush whenever it needs it. Protecting your water feature also involves preventing weather damage. Ideally, your water feature should be brought inside in winter. However, if this isn’t possible, we recommend using a cover to protect it from snow, ice, and rain.
