Setting Up an Armillary / Sun Dial
Set up so the arrow (Gnomon) is pointing true north (Not Magnetic), this will set the armillary in the correct aspect. (If you do not have a compass to help you align your armillary then you can use the sun. At noon, stand with your back to the sun, which is due south at that time. Point the arrow away from you and it should be facing north, well enough to judge time fairly accurately. ) Secure this to a base or plinth etc with screws in the base Loosen the large knob on the base, to allow the unit to pivot. This then allows the arrow to move up and down the horizon along the north axis. With the aid of a watch, move this along its axis until the correct time is shown by the shadow against the roman numerals. Tighten knob to hold in place. Over the seasons, because the sun sets and rises at different heights, it will be necessary to reset by doing the three last points to achieve a more accurate reading.
