Garden Bench Buying Guide
The simple style of a garden bench lends itself to any home landscaping scheme, and some of the larger 4-seat options are often used in parks and at schools for easy seating that is practically maintenance free. Wooden benches are the most popular style, and more recently, other options have started to appear on the market, manufactured using stone, various metals, resin, and even rattan. This guide will cover all you need to know about which bench will be the perfect fit for your garden. Shop all Garden Benches >>

Metal benches offer an interesting choice, with options in cast aluminium, tubular steel, and even wrought iron. They generally come as two seat versions with design options that range from simple to ornate. On the ornate side, the mixed cast iron and steel benches are popular, depicting country scenes with trees or even horses across the back. Metal glider benches are popular, as they provide a gentle rocking motion, a relaxing addition to any garden setting.

Garden benches made from stone are always backless, and many are designed in classical styles with elegant scrollwork. These are generally cast from original moulds made from historical pieces. Riven stone designs have a rough natural stone finish which fits in perfectly in organic landscaping schemes. Some designers of contemporary gardens opt for the modern curved designs, made from Indian sandstone or grey shark-stone. The durability of all these benches make them timeless keepsakes that can be passed down to the next generation. This also makes them popular as memorial or celebration benches.

Resin and Plastic
Plastic and resin benches are lightweight, maintenance free, and typically more affordable than other options. Some designs come with the added advantage of storage built under the seat. Although less common, there is a limited range of woven polyrattan benches available.

Garden Bench Sizes
The size of the bench is important, and they are frequently sold as 2, 3 or 4 seat benches. These seats are based on the size of average adults. A bench designed for two, is generally around 120cm long or around 4 feet wide. A 3-seat bench is around 150 cm wide or about 5 feet. These sizes give you a good approximation of the space needed.
Garden Bench Alternatives
For garden seating that offers a little more comfort, the garden swing seat is perfect. This traditional style often comes with deep cushions and a sun canopy for added protection. Some can even convert to a swinging bed, perfect for lazy days in the garden.
Another alternative would be a garden arbour, which includes a bench-style seat with an arching roof and sides. They are perfect for creating shelter in windy exposed gardens thanks to the enclosed sides and back. They add a fantastic focal point to the garden, especially when planted with climbers.
