Height-adjustable Garden Tables Explained
Instructions and demonstrations for corner and casual sofa dining sets
Garden furniture design is always evolving, with new ideas and developments in materials, styles, and functionality coming on board each season. One of the newest trends in patio furniture is sets that include a height-adjustable table.

These are sold with casual dining sets that have a sofa next to the table, so that you can easily adjust the table lower after dinner for a more relaxed atmosphere. The sofas come in L-shapes, corner arrangements, and even traditional 3-seat styles, and they sometimes include an armchair and footstools for additional seating around the table.
The benefit of the multi-position rising table is that it can be set at full dining table height, perfect for full on knife-and-fork dining, with the sofas manufactured at an ideal height for eating around a table. After dinner, the same table can simply be reduced in height to a coffee table, which is ideal for social drinks and trays of afternoon teas. This alleviates the need for both a dining and sofa set, perfect in gardens where space is limited.
The mechanisms that adjust table height differ according to the manufacturer, but all have a simple operation. Most tables adjust to two heights, low or high, but the LIFE tables can also be adjusted to incremental positions.
For the Maze collection, changing the table height requires two people, one at each end of the table. Each person lifts the table top and moves the partial legs 50mm sideways into an adjacent locator slot in the table base. This simple adjustment requires no mechanical intervention, and once in position, the table is as firm as a fixed-leg table. Adjustable rattan tables are available in the Kingston, Tuscany, Winchester, and Oxford collections. This is also available for the spray stone glass topped tables available with some of the outdoor fabric furniture sets. Although these tables are larger, the mechanism for adjustment is the same.

Bramblecrest height adjustable tables require two people and a simple rotation with no mechanical intervention. With one person on each end, you simply lift the table, rotate it 90 degrees, and lower it back into the base. The table is secure in both positions to allow for easy dining or after dinner drinks. These rattan tables are available in the Oakridge, Monterey, and Patagonia ranges of casual dining sets.

The Royalcraft mechanism is different from all other brand ranges but just as easy to operate. While placing your feet in the post-box sized gaps in the table base, two people on opposite sides of the table lift the top from the base. This is then set aside carefully across the footstools whilst you perform the second operation. Inside the base of the table on each side, slide the aluminium bars into the second position, allowing for the new table height. The table top is then slotted back into the housings. Altogether, it only takes a couple of minutes with no hydraulics required. These tables are available in the Wentworth, Seychelles, and Lisbon casual corner collections, perfect for dining or drinks parties.

The Alexander Rose Grand collection includes adjustable tables, and they work with a simple rotation system. The table top is lifted and rotated 90 degrees into a separate coffee table height locator. This needs two people to operate but only takes a second or two to convert it to either coffee or dining table height. The large dining tables, are equally as impressive when converted to a coffee table, giving lots of space for entertaining with drinks and nibbles.

LIFE Outdoor Living
The two great aspects of the LIFE tables are that it only takes one person to adjust the table height and there are more than two positions that can be used. Perform the action in one simple step using a hydraulic foot pedal, which raises the height in one smooth motion. To lower the table, depress the pedal and push down on the table top until you have reached the desired height. This action means you can stop at different heights to accommodate different needs, such as children or wheelchairs, for more convenient dining and drinks. Several of the LIFE aluminium and rattan ranges include rectangular tables with this function, including the Aya, Timber, and Hawaii collections.
