Brits ''urged to consider rainwater harvesting''

Rainwater harvesting systems could help people in the UK reduce their dependency on mains water, according to experts.
Sustainability specialists Envirowise has claimed that, as well as reducing dependency on mains water, people could be guarded against potential shortages and water price hikes by harvesting water.
This echoes suggestions last week from Mike Norton, chairman of the UK Rainwater Harvesting Association, who said that homeowners have to start "taking control of the billions of gallons of water that is wasted every day".
Mr Norton explained that the harvesting of rainwater and grey water - the waste water from baths and showers - can reduce the amount of water that is poured into drains and could be usefully re-used "to flush toilets or for watering the garden".
"There is no reason on earth why we should use carefully cleaned water just to flush the loo," he told Materials Handling World Magazine.
Rainwater harvesting kits from an online garden centre typically come complete with everything that you need, including tank, down pipe filter, submersible pump and suction valves.
