One of the features of Chelsea Flower show 2009 is the focus on ‘grow your own’. As interest rises it is still not too late to get started with a few seeds and a raised bed garden planter.
You can plants directly into the soil of a raised bed garden planter outdoors and start to harvest salad crops like radishes, beetroot, spinach and lettuce with in weeks. A bit of protection with garden fleece if the weather forecast is cool overnight is all you need to get on the grow your own trail to self sufficiency.
This year the sale of vegetable seeds has exceeded the sale of flower seeds and concern for the environment, worries about healthy eating and the credit crunch have led to packets of vegetable seeds selling at rates in excess of flower seeds. Sales are reported as rising by up to 60% on last spring 2008. Chelsea flower show garden designers have reflected this trend and interest through out the show. © Copyright
