The Scilla Siberica, also more commonly known as Blue Bells,  produce shiny basal leaves and racemes of bowl shaped flowers. A new addition to our catalogue is S. peruviana which is a real ‘must have’ for the garden being much larger than most Scilla types, having strong stems supporting many small flowers, creating a globe effect. Scilla are happy in any well-drained, moist soil. Can easily be divided once clumps become over crowded. Plant 10cm deep 7cm apart 150 per sq metre. S. peruviana 15cm deep 15cm apart 50 per sq metre.

Our bulb supplier has been selected due to the high standard of products supplied. The packs supplied are larger than that of other suppliers and this is because our packs have generally been designed for use in planting areas.

Large bulbs plant 20cm deep 20cm apart 25 per sq metre. Small bulbs plant 10cm deep 10cm apart 100 per sq metre.

Planting Guide
Hints and tips...

Unpack on arrival
  • Check order is correct and quality is as expected.
  • Store in a cool, dry and dark place with good air circulation.
  • Planting should be done as soon as possible.

Soil condition:
Soil should not be too wet and have good drainage but
should have good moisture retention as bulbs are not deep rooted.
Soil structure can be improved by adding course sand or well rotted
organic material. The ideal PH level is approximately 6.5.

Fertiliser is not essential but a dressing of a high potash and phosphate
fertiliser such as bone meal or hoof and bone applied before planting
may be beneficial.

Planting:
As a rule of thumb bulbs should be planted at least two and a
half times the height of the bulb and far enough apart as not to touch
each other. Plant bulbs in small groups of 6-8 bulbs. It is preferable to
plant before the risks of frost so that rooting can take place quickly.
After rooting they are quite frost tolerant.

When planting in grass areas mowing should not take place until the
leaves have died off (about six weeks from planting.) Do not tie up or
knot the foliage as this cuts off food supply.

Caution:
Bulbs can be toxic and should not be eaten. Some types may cause
skin irritation therefore gloves should be worn.
