Proposed plant protector ban ''causes controversy''

Two groups have launched a targeted campaign aimed at forcing the commencement of an impact study on the effect of the proposed new EU regulations on the garden industry.
The Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) and the Crop Protection Association have launched a campaign to force members of the European Parliament to launch a study to find out what effect the future new EU regulation for plant protection products will have on the garden industry.
According to the HTA, the regulation could remove 85 per cent of the active ingredients used in plant protection products and would have a "dramatic effect on plant growing and plant care" by growers and garden centre retailers.
Regulation changes could also affect home gardeners seeking to control the growth of weeds, fungal diseases and weevils in ornamental plants in their Haddonstone planters, GleeWire has reported.
"The potential impact on agriculture and food production has already been highlighted but so far the impact on the gardening industry has not been widely publicised," the HTA explained.
Members of the European Parliament are set to vote on the issue on November 5th.
