The best way to keep a lawn healthy and green is to compost it twice or three times a year, according to new advice released.
Gardening website weekendgardener.net, has claimed that compost is preferable to fertiliser because it is both safe and organic.
Furthermore, adding compost means that homeowners or allotment keepers are not perpetually adding chemical-based fertilisers to their garden.
According to the online information source, the other benefits of compost are that it does not burn grass if it is put on too liberally while it also will not stain concrete pathways, brickwork or metal garden furniture.
Old manure-based fertilisers do not smell and work fast, it was claimed.
According to the BBC, there are a number of items that gardeners should not place in their own compost heap, including: woody material, synthetic fabrics, food scraps, meat or bones, diseased plant material, soil pests, perennial roots and dog or cat waste.
