Bird tables encourage wildlife into gardens

Birds need additional help in the winter to survive and placing a bird feeder in your garden is one of the best ways to encourage wildlife into your garden.
Unfortunately birds do not only have to contend with getting enough food, they also have to cope with other predators in the garden.
The Royal Horticultural Society suggests that gardeners should always place bird tables and feeders away from areas that are accessible to cats.
Squirrels however are difficult to exclude from traditional bird tables but the Daily Mail has come up with an ingenious idea.
According to wildlife experts consulted by the paper, a touch of chilli will do the trick.
The experts suggest that squirrels hate chilli but they said the taste doesn''t bother birds in the slightest.
Lloyd Scott, RSPB wildlife adviser, said: "Using chilli powder to deter squirrels is a cheap, easy and effective solution."
Mr Scott recommends putting seed mix and chilli powder into a bag and shaking it up.
If in doubt, feeders such as the giant fat ball bird feeder will offer more protection against large predators.
