By growing your own salad you will both save money and know exactly what you are eating, it has been reported.
According to Carol Klein of the Guardian, supermarket salads are expensive and may have been "washed in chlorine, kept in cold store and drenched in preservatives" in an effort to lengthen their shelf life.
Ms Klein added that as soon as the bags are opened "they start to deteriorate rapidly" so is campaigning for gardeners to grow their own.
By choosing the appropriate varieties, she advised that a richly varied bunch of leaves "can be collected throughout the year".
Those with a small garden could consider a PatioGro Raised Vegetable Garden System, which can be used for salad crops, vegetables, flowers and even strawberries.
The system can also be placed on a balcony so can be used by city dwellers and the deep growing trays mean that it can be used throughout the growing process - from seed right through to harvesting.
